The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association recommends that Fireplaces & Chimneys be inspected/cleaned annually.

Safety Considerations: A dirty, damaged or blocked chimney can lead to a chimney fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Chimney fires can occur without anyone being aware of them. Damage from chimney fires can endanger a home and its occupants. A chimney fire has been described as creating a loud roaring noise or a loud cracking & popping noise, a lot of dense smoke, and an intense, hot smell. If you suspect that a chimney fire has occurred, stop using your fireplace and call a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep for a professional evaluation. The Chimney Sweep will sweep the chimney and use a Chimney Scan camera to view the interior of the chimney flue. Recommendations will be made on how to bring your fireplace and chimney back into compliance with safety standards.

Do not use your fireplace until it has been swept and inspected by a Certified Chimney Sweep. Damage often occurs to the interior of the flue that is not readily visible. One chimney fire may not harm a home. A second fire can burn it down. Remember, clean chimneys do not catch on fire. Make sure to have your chimney swept and inspected annually.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning can occur without anyone being aware that the carbon monoxide level in the home has exceeded a safe level. Carbon Monoxide is odorless and tasteless. Carbon Monoxide Detectors should be installed in the home. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when purchasing detectors (the number of detectors needed and the placement of the detectors depend on the type of detector and the design of your home). Remember to test the detectors as recommended by the manufacturer.
